The design proposal for this residence set amongst mature pine trees near Annan, Ontario, called for the complete replacement of a large deck wrapping the back of the home. From the outset it was important to the client that the deck be open to the landscape, and that views from the interior not be blocked by railings. This required careful consideration to grades and how the deck would respond to other landscape elements. The deck was intended to provide ease of access to hot tub, BBQ and the rear entrance (via a wheelchair accessible ramp). The deck frames a lower pavestone patio space, and lower level deck constructed to sit flush with the stone surface. Retaining walls were used below this deck-stone transition to prevent the framing timbers from coming into contact with soil. The client requested a space to relax and provide the ‘cottage feel’ right at home. The lower level deck imitates a dock on the shore of a lake, with views out to the site’s existing pond, providing a lakeside-cottage atmosphere. Materials were selected to effectively compliment the dwelling’s existing character.
