A full property design with phased construction for a Victorian era property, located on the ridge of the Niagara escarpment within Owen Sound. Client requested a unique design with artistic character, and integrated sculptural elements to compliment their home and respond effectively to a proposed kitchen addition.
Sculptural natural-stone walls became key landscape architectural components throughout the design to deal with grade changes, frame spaces, and establish presence at entrance points. The design intent was to give an impression of the escarpment geology emerging from below. To support these stacked stone walls, steel-clad concrete ‘bookends’ were used, along with steel sheets amongst the stone as highlights within these monolithic features. A custom curved cedar bench was integrated into the main feature wall and features recessed lighting that gives the bench a ‘floating’ appearance at nighttime.
Space to showcase six custom steel sculptures adjacent to the large open patio was included to maximize the site’s potential for select views to the city below. All custom steel sculptures were commissioned and created in house by Benj Art Inc.
